Dismantle – Fault Find – Refurbish – Rebuild
The Rotork for the new outlet valve at bed 29 was reported faulty by control.
Once I had the report we liaised with the electricians for a plan to inspect.
We all headed down to SSF bed 29 to inspect the Rotork and be prepared to dismantle and disconnect it for further inspection.
Upon pressing the clutch you can clearly tell there is something wrong there which means it will have to be taken to the workshop for inspection.
To do this we had to contact control to let them know of our plans.
Disassembly + Fault find
1. Then the electricians needed to disconnect the wiring from supply. Then it was my job to detach the Rotork from the plinth that it sits on.
2. Once it has been fully detached it was taken to the workshop for further inspection.
3. The first thing to be done is to drain the oil into a container.
4. Next was to remove this Teflon tubing which slides inside the rotork holding the top handle in place.
5. Next was to remove the top hand from the body by shimming it off. It is only held in by its own compression now.
6. Upon removing we found the bearing had completely broken, clearly for quite some time. 1 fault found.
7. Now the motor is to be detached.
8. The worm shaft and rotor is then removed and cleaned.
9. Now the shaft inside the body is left to be removed. There is a surclip at the bottom of the actuator that holds the shaft in place from dropping out the bottom. Using surclip pliers this is removed.
10. On the other side the inner race is stuck to the shaft so using bearing pullers it is removed.
13. The Rotork is now completely hollow inside and the broken clutch has been confirmed.
14. That was the disassembly and fault finding complete now all parts need to be cleaned in the parts washer and wiped dry, and replacement components need to be obtained and then the Rotork rebuilt.
16. A service kit was gathered which I managed to take the new clutch from. I then fitted the new clutch and spring and also you can see the Rotork has been cleaned spotless. You can see the clutch mechanism to the left of the picture.
17. The gearing was then fitted back together and slotted in the middle.
18. The surclip is then reattached at the bottom to stop the gearing falling through.
21. I proved the clutch system worked at the end of the working day.
All that is left now is the bearing and top handle to be fitted on which I gave Lee Sirmon the dimensions for to order using Vernier calipers and then that is your entire Rotork rebuilt. To add it would then need to be refilled with oil.
